Slide Splinters: Icon of the Seas Malfunction

Guests aboard Icon of the Seas got more thrill than they bargained for when a section of the “Frightening Bolt” waterslide shattered mid-ride. One passenger sustained injuries, and the slide was shut down immediately. Royal Caribbean has launched an internal investigation, but safety experts are already calling for independent inspections of all cruise slides. A PR nightmare, yes—but also a wake-up call about the risks of “theme-park at sea” design.

CocoCay Pool Turned Rumble Zone

At Royal Caribbean’s private island, a pool full of sun-drenched passengers turned into a scene out of WrestleMania. More than 30 guests clashed in waist-deep water after an argument escalated near the swim-up bar. Security broke it up, bartenders stopped pouring, and Oasis Lagoon shut down early. Vacationers expecting “Perfect Day” instead got perfect chaos.

Legend of the Seas Floats Out—Sea Megalith Incoming

Royal Caribbean floated out its next Icon-class giant, Legend of the Seas, at the Meyer Turku yard in Finland. This LNG-powered behemoth, packed with more neighborhoods, bars, and water slides than most cities, will debut in 2026. The float-out marked a milestone in a new era of supersized cruising, with Royal clearly intent on keeping the “biggest ship” crown nailed down.

Hawaii vs. Cruise Lines: Climate Tax Showdown

Cruise lines are heading to court after Hawaii passed a controversial tourism tax of up to 14% on cruise fares. The state says the levy will help mitigate climate impacts and fund infrastructure. The industry argues it could deter half a million visitors. With a courtroom showdown set for later this year, Hawaii could become the battleground for how far environmental taxation on cruising will go.

August ended with broken slides, broken pool rules, and broken patience in Hawaii. Cruising is booming—but the bigger the ships, the bigger the headlines.
